KATALIN ANNA KÓTHAY: A Defective Statuette from the Thirteenth Dynasty and the Sculptural Production of the Late Middle Kingdom

the right side of the base, the artist had no other choice than to bring the left side of the base into line with its right side, instead of aligning it with the figure itself. The underside of the base is rough, while its bulk is uneven. The fact that the statuette does not bear any inscription suggests that it may have been unfinished. But it may also imply that it was inserted into a second base bearing an inscription, 2 ' or put in a shrine or an offering table, which was sometimes done with uninscribed statuettes. The back pillar starts at shoulder height and broadens downward. The back of the statuette shows asymmetries, the upper edge of the kilt is indicated at different heights on the two sides of the pillar and the lower curves of the buttocks are also misaligned (fig. 5). The man represented by the statuette is wearing a high-waisted kilt tied below the chest and reaching almost to the ankles, which was a typical garment worn by officials of the late Middle Kingdom. In the earlier literature, following Vandier, 24 this type of kilt was thought to have been in use from the late Twelfth Dynasty. 2 ' It has recently been considered, however, as a dating criterion for Thirteenth Dynasty non-royal statues. 26 Indeed, sculptures displaying the high-w r aisted long kilt have usually been assigned to the Thirteenth Dynasty in recent museum catalogues, while in earlier works they were attributed alternatively to the end of the Twelfth Dynasty or to the Thirteenth Dynasty, 27 or considered as belonging to the second half of the Twelfth Dynasty. 2 " In fact, none of them can be dated with certainty to the Twelfth Dynasty, and the recent observation on the dating of sculptures exhibiting the high-waisted kilt cannot be rejected. However, even if it is not attested in sculpture in the round before the 5 STRIDING STATUETTE, BACK. BUDAPEST. MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS
