MUSEE DU LOUVRE In the following I would like to call attention to a hitherto unpublished source which conveys valuable information both on Troppa and on the Roman art trade in the seventeenth century. In his Nuova raccolta di lettere Michelangelo Gualandi, a nineteenth-century Bolognese historian, published a letter from 1686 which was written to the Grand Duke of Tuscany (not named in the letter, but undoubtedly Cosimo III de' Medici) by Angelo Doni (probably the duke's agent), to which was attached a list of paintings sent to the duke's palace in Siena. :H The following item is included on it: Quattro stagioni, in tela di palmi 4 pel traverso, originale del cav. Girolamo Troppa —9 scudi. Although the picture with the Four Seasons still remains untraced, the letter contains an important addition to Troppa's biography, which may also serve as a point of reference for the setting up of the chronology of his œuvre: this is the earliest source which mentions the painter as the
