AUCTIONED AT SOTHEBY'S, NEW YORK, OCTOBER 14. 1998 the crepuscular landscape, the whirling clouds lit by the rays of the setting sun, the light streaks flashing on the horizon, the dense vegetation, as well as the organic connection between the landscape and the figures show that Troppa was an intelligent and sensitive interpreter of Mola's approach to landscape painting. Although, as opposed to the romantic landscape, the slightly commonplace-like figurai part plays a secondary role, it conveys rich painterly values. The chiaroscuro, also revealing fine nuances, the way the crepuscular lights turn into soft shades on the unveiled breast and red cloak of the Magdalen as well as on the faces of the putti, is suggestive and sensual. Not only the landscape but also the features of the putti recur in the mentioned works, e.g. in the figures of the Assumption of the Magdalen. Troppa made several compositional variants of the theme of the meditating, repentant figure of the Magdalen. 19 The closest analogy of the Budapest work among the known examples —both with regard to the positioning of the figure and the place­ment of the attributes —is a painting auctioned off at Sotheby's, London, 2003 (fig. 6). 20 Wor-
