MARIANNA DÁGI: Training the Eye: Technical Details as Clues in the Attribution of Ancient Jewellery
behind the right ear. The edges of the sheet have split apart on the left horn. Cracks can be seen on the nape. Repair work contemporaneous with the production of the earring can be seen in several places: a rectangular patch of sheet behind the right ear (fig. 3/m.), the back part of the left horn from a separate piece of sheet (fig. 3/n.), behind the left horn there is a rectangular patch of sheet (the decoration of the nape overlaps the edge of the patch, see. fig. 3/o.). 4. Inv. no. 55.199.2 (figs. 4/a-k.) Hoop and connecting element: as on piece no. 3. The catch-ring under the chin of the bull's head is missing. Head: as on piece no. 3. The forming of the right eye is different. It is framed below by a row of short straight punched lines, and tear-duct and corner of the eve are also indicated by a short straight punched line (fig. 4/j.). Tool-marks: round-shaped punch-mark with U-section (ears); punch mark in the shape of a long, arched line with V-section (?) (nostrils); straight line-like punch-mark with U-section (brow, nape, fur under the right eve, fur on the cheek); straight line-like punch-mark with V-section (corner of the eve, tear-duct of the right eye); sharp line-like marks of a V-sectioned chasing tool (around the left eye). Condition: there is some reddish discolouring and traces of melting at the join of the connecting element and the hoop, at the join of the head and the connecting element, and also in several places on the head and along the filigree wires. The join of the head and the horn split apart when the right horn was squashed. The sheet is torn on the left ear and there is also a hole at the tip of the left horn. The catchring is broken off, and only traces of solder are visible.
