In addition to the jubilee exhibitions of 2006, the Museum of Fine Arts celebrated its cente­nary with an album representing the remarkable masterpieces of its collections. This large, impressive volume including full-page colour-plates filled a decade long deficiency. In 1987, a similar book, representing the whole collection of the miLseum and edited by Klára Garas, was published by Corvina Publishing House. The fact that it ran into several editions and was translated into many languages was ample proof of the popularity of this kind of book. Two other reasons justifying the existence of the present album were the much better quality of the reproductions, thanks to continual developments in printing technology, and the need to sum­marize several new results of the last few years. The editor of the album decided that although it would contain fewer pieces, she would neverthe­less allocate far more space to the analysis of the masterpieces selected rather than just a few lines of description as in the previous volume. She was the first in the history of the Budapest Museum of Fine Arts to involve almost the entire curato­rial staff in the work, and in addition to this she utilised the skills of outside experts on numer­ous occasions. This album was compiled by 41 authors, contains 155 short essays, and represents 162 works, thus in comparison to the previous works, it is much richer in information and pro­vides a wdder context for the masterpieces of the Museum of Fine Arts.
