ANNUAL REPORT - A 2006. ÉV - KATA BODOR: Re:mbrandt: Contemporary Hungarian Artists Respond
NTERIÜR VIEW OF THE EXHIBITION Rembrandt's 36+1 paintings in a time sequence in order to produce a motion picture-like flow of images. One is able to see a continuous transition of the pictures that bring to life the face and body producing an impressive illusion of "Rembrandt" in motion, while in addition a simulated dialogue with the viewer is created. On the one hand this strange "special effects film" is homage to the great ideal of painting —which is primarily to convey realism. On the other hand, by putting everything in quotation marks the film confronts viewers with the need for a picture in motion, which can dull our ability to experience the power and beauty of still-lifes to depict soul. Because of the motion details can barely be perceived, the self-portraits become blurred, and it is no longer possible to see Rembrandt's face and its subtle changes. The face remains strongly characteristic yet without real depth. This example well illustrates how an artist can respond to a four hundred year-old œuvre, to the changes in art, and to the recipients of it all at the same time. The curator, András Rényi's aim was to show such changes as alluded to above with the help of the following artists: Imre Bak, András Bernát, Eszter Csurka, Magda Csutak, Bazil Duliskovich, El Kazovszkij, Péter Forgács, György Jovánovics, Zsigmond Károlyi, Ilona Keserű, Frigyes König, Péter Lajtai Langer, István Nádler, István Orosz, Gyula Pauer, Sándor Rácmolnár, Zoltán Szegedy-Maszák and János Szirtes.
