ANNUAL REPORT - A 2006. ÉV - VILMOS TÁTRAI: The New Permanent Exhibition of the Italian Collection of the Old Masters' Gallery
: INTERIOR VIEW OF THE EXHIBITION The installation of the Italian material preceding the present one was organized within the framework of the project to re-mount the entire permanent exhibition of the Old Masters' Gallery, which was completed on 19 March, 1998, and necessitated by renovation work. Because the wing overlooking the City Park had to be cleared out, the exhibition had less than the ideal amount of space but nevertheless several good and even impressive approaches were adopted in the way the display was organized. 1 However, the lack of space unfortunately meant that there was insufficient space and visibility for each work of art. On this occasion it was possible to mitigate the confined effect, but not even the ten rooms available provided the opportunity for a really spacious, loose arrangement. A good number of paintings, equally worthy of being exhibited in the gallery, remained in storage from this point on. One by no means negligible advantage rendered by this situation, is that the paintings in storage can be used to replace the works lent for temporary exhibitions abroad. The continuity that has been maintained during the history of the Italian collection defines the way in which it is divided into sections, and only provides the opportunity for variation within this.
