ZOLTÁN KOVÁCS: "The Witty Pieter Quast": The Works of an Amsterdam Master in Hungary Then and Now

F. D. O. Obreen first published documents in connection with Quast's life and activity as a painter, Archief voor Nederlandsche Kunstgeschiedenis, Rotterdam 1877-1890, vol. 3, 263; vol. 5, 176, 306.— We have Abraham Bredius to thank for fundamental information related to Quast's art: "Pieter Jansz. Quast," Oud Holland 20 (1902), 65-82, his study, which to the present day provides the most thorough survey of our master, supplemented with the list of Quast-artworks known by him. —Biographical data on the artist, who also worked as an engraver, was summarised by F. G. Waller, Biographisch woordenboek van Noord Nederlandsche graveurs, The Hague 1938, 263.—On Quast's activity as a sculptor, J. Leeuwenberg, "Beeldhouwwerk van de schilder Pieter Quast," Bulletin van bet Rijksmuseum 14 (1966), 60-64.— Y. I. Kuznetsov published Quast's series of drawings at the Hermitage: "Pieter Quast Copied Savery's Naer het leven Drawings," in Album Amicorum J. G. van Gelder, The Hague 1973, 215-18.—On Quast's drawings depicting beggars, D. de Floop-Scheffer, "Een série bedelaars door Pieter Quast: 'T is al verwart-gaereií," Bulletin van het Rijksmuseum 22 (1974) 166-72.—On the influence of the theatre of the period, and of Jacques Callot on P. Quast, see B. A. Stanton-Hirst, The Influence of the Theatre on the Works of Pieter Jansz Quast, Diss., Madison, WI, 1978; cited in "Pieter Quast and the Theater," Oud Holland 96 (1982), 213-37.—Although a significant part of Quast's creative period (1634-1643) was spent in The Hague, even the most recent art historical treatments presenting the representatives of the Hague School have not deemed him worthy of special attention. See E. Buijsen, Haagse Schilders in de Gouden Eeuw. Het Hoogsteder Lexicon van alle schilders werkzaam in Den Haag 1600-1700, The Hague and Zwolle 1999, 38, 338-39. J. Briels, Vlaamse schilders en de dageraad van Hollands Gouden Eeuw 1585-1630, Antwerp 1997, 370. The current study is limited to the introduction of Quast's paintings in Hungarian collections. T. Gerszi intensively discusses the six Quast drawings at the Museum of Fine Arts (inv. nos. 1561, 1562, 1563, 1564, 1565, 1566): I7tb Century Dutch and Flemish Drawings in the Budapest Museum of Fine Arts. A Complete Catalogue, Budapest 2005, 200-4, nos. 192-197. A. Bredius, Künstler-Inventare. Urkunden zur Geschichte der holländischen Kunst des XVI"'", XVII' 1 " und XVIII"'" Jahrhunderts. Quellenstudien zur Holländischen Kunstgeschichte V, Hrsg. von C. Hofstede de Groot, Haag 1915, 273-75. Bredius 1902, 71. Bredius publishes the inventory of estate in its entirety, 1902, 72-73. In addition to the terracotta relief in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam that is signed and dated to 1629, the special literature attributes a few more reliefs to him. See Leeuwenberg 1966, 60-64. Kuznetsov 1963, 215-18, figs. 1-6.
