ZOLTÁN HORVÁTH: A unique servant statue in the Egyptian Collection

A considerable part of the inscription on the upper side has disappeared from the central portion and from the lower left quadrant. Practically the whole of col. 4 has become indecipherable. Certain signs have become smudged, and some pitch-like material makes the reading of the lower portion of cols. 4-5 even more difficult. The lower longer edge of the board has been cut out along a curved line between cols. 2 and 5, 47 and there is a hole in the middle lower section for the wooden peg that once fixed the tablet to the statue. This treatment caused damage to the text on the upper side, although it appears that the hole was deliberately positioned between cols. 3 and 4. It follows that both the hole and the cutting were later additions to a previously inscribed surface.
