acquisitions of the last years, which enriched significantly the mediaeval collection, were placed in Rooms 1 and 2. The middle section of the Saint Andrew altarpiece from the Master of Retascón is one of the earliest paintings among the mediaeval panel paintings. 2 Pedro Garcia de Benabarre's two door-paintings, depicting Saint Paul and Saint Peter used to be the part of the central altar-painting of the Montanyana parish church, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. 3 The Calvary, attributed to the Castilian Los Balbases master must have been a panel painting of an enormous altar. 4 We completed the fourteenth to sixteenth century paintings in Rooms 1-3 with the Spanish piece of the Sculpture Collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, creating a reference to the sculpture-painting artworks unit represented in mediaeval altars. In Room 2, we retained the retableau-reconstruction exhibited in a temporary show, which we designed following the construction and proportions of a Catalan winged altar, a project realised by Studio Narmer (fig. 66). For this piece is a good illustration of the so-called retableau, a rigid, Spanish altar wall used in the Middle Ages, that is hardly known in Hungary.
