HEDVIG GYŐRY: On the Collars of the Gamhud Coffins

8. The neckband and collar of coffin, inv. no. 51.2018/1, Budapest, Museum of Fine Arts distinctive feature, the use of which was not restricted to cartonnage sets made up of five or six pieces; they can be seen regularly on mummy shrouds as well. Such shrouds were found inside of both bulked and rhomboid coffins, the lids of which were again often decorated with the grid pattern. The study of Annie Schweitzer, cited above, demonstrated that the one-piece shrouds should be dated slightly later than the multiplepiece sets, probably some time in the second or first century BC. It is known that the large number of E group coffins, which usually contained shrouds of this type, have been used over a longer period; yet it is impossible at this point to further specify their dating.
