DÁGI, MARIANNA: 'Tinkers' and 'Patchers': Some Notes on the Ancient Repairs of Greek Vases

22. c The Antique holes and channel on the interior of the krater. Budapest, Museum of Fine Arts There are remains of glue on the fragments of the handle. The handle was not broken at the time of its ancient repair. The holes are approximately 2 mm in diameter. In the bottom of the krater: In the bottom of the body of the vase there are two cylindrical holes and a connecting channel. In contrast with the channels observed on the handle, the sides of this one are not parallel. The deep scratches testify that the channel was only scratched roughly due to the position. The flaked-off surface was touched up with greyish-black paint (see the area at the edges of the channel). The dark grey incrustation in the drill holes and the channel could be the remains of lead used for mending (fig. 22. c). Both holes are 3 mm in diameter and at a distance of 1.4 cm from each other. On the removed foot: In the middle of the foot there are two cylindrical holes at a distance of 1.4 cm from each other. The clay is flaked off on both edges of the holes. One hole shows the remains of some reddish material (fig. 22. d). There are remains of glue on the top of the foot.
