DÁGI, MARIANNA: 'Tinkers' and 'Patchers': Some Notes on the Ancient Repairs of Greek Vases
22. a Campanian red-figure bell-krater: the stub of the handle on the body of the vase with traces of Antique repair. Budapest, Museum of Fine Arts 14. Campanian red-figure bell-krater (figs. 22. a-d) Inv. no. T. 656.1 - the body: the Capua Painter, third quarter of the 4 th century BC; T.656.2 - the foot: CA workshop, around 340-320 BC. Donation of Marcell Nemes. Bibi.: Oroszlán, Z., Az antik terrakottagyűjtemény, Budapest 1930, 123, no. 37/3; Szilágyi J.Gy, CVA Hongrie 1, 86-87, pl. 35, nos. 1-2 - the body; 88, pl. 36, no. 4 - the foot. 79 Restored: 80 the foot is a modern completion. There are traces of repair remaining on the body of the vase: in the stubs of the handle, in the bottom of the vase, on the fragments of the broken handle and on the removed foot. J.Gy. Szilágyi published the body and the foot separately, because they are from different workshops. He dates the holes to modern times (Szilágyi, J.Gy. CVA Hongrie 1, 86 and 88). Some notes on the history of the artefact: Marcell Nemes donated it to the Museum in 1917. In the photographs taken in 1961-1962 the krater can be seen with the old completions and intact. The handles and the lip were completed with plaster and painted in the colour of the original surface (neg. nos. A. 5585; A. 6028; A. 6685). In the photograph taken in 1969, the foot and a part of the rim completion was removed; two holes were exposed in the left handle, and it can be seen that it is stuck together from fragments (neg. no. A.l 1465). The present state of the krater is the result of conservation work done in 1984, when the foot was completed with plaster.
