LIPTAY, ÉVA: Between Heaven and Earth. The Motif of the Cow Coming out of the Mountain

2. The scene with the burial. Budapest, Museum of Fine Arts mourner is depicted squatting behind a small offering table. Right to the mourner, an jmj-wt-emblem symbolizes the god of the Netherworld (the inscription reads c >b.t, nb jmnt.t), and finally the funerary priest closes the scene. The priest, holding an 'nh-sign in his one hand, hands a .v/im-sceptre towards the deceased with the other. Another figure of the cobra-goddess, labelled as widj.t dwi.t(j), fills the space above the outstretched arm of the priest. The two short columns before the mummy betray the titles of the deceased who is identified with Osiris (Wsjr nb hh nb(.t) pr $m ( j.t-Jmn). The caption reveals that she served as a chantress of Amun in Karnak, but does not specify her name. Ritual dimension and a mythical event coincide with each other again. We see Osiris on his throne, wearing the red crown and holding an r «/j-sign in his hand. The short inscription designates him simply as god (ntr). Another jmj-wt symbol, which differs from the former one, is set in front of the throne of Osiris. In addition, the scene includes an elongated vessel adorned with a single stem of lotus and closed by a conical top, and a lettuce-like plant. The cobra with outstretched wings, who faces Osiris on the throne, is the north­ern goddess whose task is to protect the resurrected body of the god. The left side of the same coffin-case depicts another variant of the scene "the cow coming out of the mountain" (fig. 3), which is a parallel but shortened version of the former.
