THE YEAR 2003 - NEW ACQUISITIONS - CIFKA, BRIGITTA: Sir Joseph Noel Patorís Madonna with the Sleeping Christ Child and the Infant Saint John the Baptist
on the reverse by the Scottish landscape painter, Alexander Fraser (1829-1899) 11 in 1866. 12 Reflecting the influence of Constable, the fine painting represents a monumental U-shaped Baroque palace in a parkland setting. Due to its oversized dimensions, the building had already been abandoned during the lifetime of the Lady, but the domed, round Hamilton Mausoleum that can be seen emerging from the background was extended still by her grandfather, the 10th Duke of Hamilton, who was also buried there. Paton's painting, the first to have entered a public collection in the Continent, is a perfect example of the artist's working methods and early work. Together with the picture by Fraser they are worthy representatives of early 19th-century Scottish painting in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts.
