FORRAI, KORNÉLIA HOÓS, MARIANNA-SOMOS, ÉVA: The Research and Restoration of a Painting on Panel, Transferred to Canvas, by Domenico Puligo. Madonna and Child with Saint Sebastian and Saint Roch

THE RESEARCH AND RESTORATION OF A PAINTING ON PANEL, TRANSFERRED TO CANVAS, BY DOMENICO PULIGO. THE VIRGIN AND CHILD WITH SAINT SEBASTIAN AND SAINT ROCH The Budapest painting of The Virgin and Child with Saint Sebastian and Saint Roch has until recently been assumed to be by Andrea del Sarto's studio. 1 However, the attribution to Domenico Puligo, which had been put forward previously, was endorsed by Elena Capretti in the catalogue of the Puligo exhibition that she co-curated in Florence in 2002. 2 The principal figure in the painting is the Virgin, standing on a low octagonal pedestal, holding the infant Christ in her arms. She is flanked by Saint Roch to her left, showing his wounds, and Saint Sebastian to her right, with an arrow and the palm of martyrdom. The Madonna is set under a baldachin with a fine cloth hanging, (figs. 20-22). The composition is in the tradition of 'sacra conversazione'. In interpretation as well as in its dimensions, our painting offers close parallels with Andrea del Sarto's 20. The painting before treatment 21.
