The Year 2002

FROM RAPHAEL TO TIEPOLO. ITALIAN MASTERPIECES FROM THE COLLECTION OF THE BUDAPEST MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS APRIL 25 - AUGUST 4, 2002. MONTRÉAL, MUSÉE DES BEAUX-ARTS CURATOR OF THE EXHIBITION! HILLIARD T. GOLDFARB The exhibition presented 42 of the works in our Museum's collection of Italian paintings to the Canadian public (fig. 77). Outstanding quality, diversity of genres, and long range of periods had been the key aspects involved in the selection process. The earliest work was a Gothic painted crucifix by Lorenzo Monaco, while the latest one was a Rococo landscape by Vittorio Amedeo Cignaroli. Besides Raphael, who was represented by the last masterpiece of his Florentine period, the Esterházy Madonna, such prominent figures of Italian painting were included as Sassetta, Filippino Lippi, Sodoma, Sebastiano del Piombo, Romanino, Tiziano, Pordenone, Jacopo Bassano, Moretto da Brescia, Lorenzo Lotto, Tintoretto, Veronese, Annibale Carracci, Bernardo Cavailino, Johann Liss, Bernardo Strozzi, Sebastiano Ricci, Bellotto, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, and Giuseppe Maria Crespi. The Virgin and the Child with Saint Francis by Lorenzo Lotto was restored on this particular occasion by Mária Velekey, and the removal of overpaintings provided us with evidence in favour of Lotto's authorship of the painting, previously only tentatively attributed to the master. On behalf of the Canadian party, the exhibition was administered by Hilliard T. Goldfarb. Dr Goldfarb has identified the author of one of the works shown at the exhibition, the Sleeping Girl, which had been erroneously attributed to Domenico Fetti for long, and he will publish it in an article to appear in the forthcoming issue of the present Bulletin. The catalogue of the exhibition was released as a special issue of Connaissance des Arts. The introduction on the history of the Museum was written by Ildikó Ember, while the entries, together with a brief art-historical overview, are by Vilmos Tátrai. v. T. Translated by A. V.
