ons of the National Picture Gallery, which was founded in 1871, the corpus of the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, established nearly a hundred years after Széchényi's deed. As the centennial of our Museum's inauguration is approaching, one feels induced to make a review. The circumstances of its foundation as well as the formation of its collections make it apparent that it is not a sovereign institution but an aristocratic-civic one. It owes all of its greatness to the private efforts of its founders and other collectors. The present exhibition pays homage to the collectors of yore and also calls attention to the birth of the idea of an Egyptian collection. To recite the names of the great collectors (Esterházy, Pyrker, Zichy, Delhaes, Ferenczy, etc.) only referentially, one work has been displayed from each of their collections to make it manifest how a big task is for the Museum's developers and supporters of the present and the future to join the illustrious company of the predecessors (fig. 75).
