Besides the independent watercolours, he also composed preliminary drawings for graphical series immensely popular at that time. Supposedly, his first Hungarian journey was occasioned by a similar commission: the Conrad Adolph Hartleben Publishing House published a book illustrated with steel engravings in Pest, 1838, entitled Malerische Ansichten der Donau in Ungarn. 1 Thomas Ender can also be supposed to have visited Gödöllő during his sojourn in Pest in 1837. The construction of the representative family residence was started around 1735 by Antal 1 Grassalkovich, who was elevated from the lower nobility to aristocracy. 8 The palace gained its final Baroque appearance after several renovations and enlargements at the end of the 1760s, and today it is considered the most significant, exemplary building type of the age. 63.
