63. Jacopo Bassano: The Meeting of Jacob and Rachel at the Well, c. 1566. Torino, Private collection have been lost, or even Ridolfi might have been simply mistaken, as his information was 60 years belated. The pictures of related subject, now in Vienna and Rome, representing the agrarian works of the year, are attributed by art historians to Francesco and Leandro Bassano, supposing at collaboration from Jacopo, 16 and they could hardly have been executed before the middle 1570s. The authorship of Francesco and Leandro Bassano is further supported by the engravings of Jan and Raphael Sadeler inscribed only as "Bassan pinxit", while with Jacopo's compositions they consistently add the first name as well. 17 From the 1560s on paintings attachable to months or seasons are missing from Jacopo's oeuvre, while scenes representing pastoral episodes from the Old Testament are well known from that period 18 (fig 62-63).
