SZÉPE, HELENA KATALIN: Civic and artistic identity in illuminated Venetian documents

53. Detached opening leaf from the Commissione of Doge Pasquale Cicogna to Silvestro Memo, as Podestà and Capitano of Sacile, 1585-1595, Budapest, Museum of Fine Arts, Inv. K 70.42 54. Huntington Master, detached opening leaf of the Commissione of Doge Pasquale Cicogna to Tommaso Morosini as Podestà and Capitano (of Verona, 1586?), London, British Library, Add. 20,916, 22 from the opposing so-called 'giovannV , so that the personal level of victory is most pointed. 35 This final dogale illumination for Duodo copies the red ship in the background of the 1578 illumination, suggesting that it was made in the Huntington Master's workshop. The technique and individual motifs, however, show remarkable affinities to the signed and documented illuminations by Valerio Mariani for Francesco Maria II della Rovere from 1603 to 1621. Valerio Mariani is first recorded in documents as the fourteen-year old garzoné of Giovanni Maria Bodovino in the register of the Giustizie Vecchie of December 1, 1582. 36 He is then listed in the Fraglia de 1 Pittori from 1596-1598, when he must have become established on his own. 37 He would have been just nineteen at the date of the Duodo dogale, but the miniature shows the smooth, volumetric finish achieved through meticulous stippling of the artist who illuminated and signed the 35 Gullino, op.cit. (note 23). 36 I have made no attempt to modernize or correct the archive texts which are transcribed in this note and in note 50. The 'Accordo' between Bodovino and Valerio Mariani of December 1, 1582 begins as follows, "Valerio fio de M. Terenzio da pesaro pur di ani 14 in circha se scrive star et lavorar alarte del miniador con M. Jama de Francesco boduin in calle dalla aqua per ani sie..." Archivio di Stato, Venice.
