DÁGI, MARIANNA - SIPOS, ENIKŐ: Report on the Conservation of Coptic Textiles in the Department of Greek and Roman Antiquities (1999-2000)

34-35. New pieces that belong together. Budapest. Museum of Fine Arts, inv. nos. 93.2.A and 93.3.A 93.2.A and 93.3.A (figs. 34-35): material, colour, pattern (clavus of light brown and brown woollen thread with leaf-shaped ending on a yellow wool field) and technique of weaving all fit nicely. Differences can be seen in the dimensions of the leafshaped part (the leaf-ornament of 93.2. A is 8 mm. longer than that on 93.3. A), which might be a consequence of the differing density of the weaving on the two pieces. Small differences of pattern can also be noticed in the leaf-shaped part. 14 All these factors seem to suggest that the two pieces quite clearly belong together. 97.40. A, 97.41.A and 97.42.A (figs. 36-38): material (linen and wool), colour, pattern (leaf-pattern in black/dark blue, yellow, red, and white on a linen background) and the technique of weaving all correspond. The warp- and weft-count for all three pieces is 12 and 20-22. The only difference is in the dimensions of the leaves: their length is between 5.6 and 5.2 cm, their width, 2.5-2.7 cm. The difference in size between the leaves can, however, be neglected: on a similar large fragment in Dijon with leafornament there is a very striking difference in scale between leaves. 15 14 Larger or smaller differences of dimensions and pattern can be noticed in larger fragments and even complete textiles. See e.g. two Coptic textiles in the Louvre ( Du Bourguet, P.. Musée National du Louvre. Catalogue des Étoffes Coptes I, Paris 1964, p. 50, no. A4 and p. 101, no. C 42 ): on the one (C 42) there is a minimal discrepancy between the ornament inside the two medallions; on the other textile (A 4), the two leaf-shaped ornaments surround completely different patterns. 15 See Les tissus coptes, op.cit. (note 8), no. 101.
