SCHMIDT, VICTOR M.: A Duccesque Fragment of the Coronation of the Virgin
22. Computer Reconstruction of Fig. 12. Version I (Elwin Koster/Victor M. Schmidt). On the basis of the actual dimensions of the fragment (51.5 x 32 cm) it was quite easy to calculate the original width. In the case of tabernacle no. 35 the width of the Virgin and Christ seated, measured from back to back, would be ca. 63.2 cm; the width of the throne would be ca. 83 cm (fig. 22). In the case of the New York triptych these distances would be ca. 67.3 cm and 88.1 cm, respectively (fig. 23). These are minimum measurements. If one would allow, as seems reasonable, for some space between the throne and the left and right of the panel, the width of the panel would have been bigger, and even more so, if originally angels as attendant figures were included. Now, the top of the truncated triangular pictorial surface above the enthroned Virgin of the Maestà measures in its present state 93.5 cm (fig. 13). Originally it must have been smaller because one has to take into account the engaged frames that originally surrounded the central field and the prophets to the left and right. 22 If White is correct in assuming that the original width of the Computer Reconstruction of Fig. 12.
