case of Hori's family. Sneferu appears to have been a minor at Hori's death, since he had not been inaugurated into the latter's office yet. Nonetheless, he has been registered as head of the wpwt-Mst instead of his mother. An autobiographical inscription from Naga ed-Deir refers to a woman as 'the praised one of his husband's wpwt, 21 also implying that wpwt-Wsts were exclusively headed by men. It follows from this that these documents might not reflect coresidency in each case, but registered individuals placed in charge of a male title-holder. If this was the case, it is possible that before the death of Hori's father the two families lived together and two w/wi-lists were composed of the household, one from the conjugal family unit of Hori's father, and the other from that of Hori himself. Obligations imposed on a man were closely associated with regular services he perfonned for the state. Consequently, two adult males in one household represented two unconnected units from administrative point of view. This would confirm Griffith's reconstruction of the damaged lists, that is, while two lists were registered at death of a family head. 2) In addition to the wpwt-lists of Hori's family, another text of the same kind has survived among the Kahun town-papyri (IV. I). 2 * The list is headed by the lector priest Khakaura-sneferu, and preserves a unit larger than Hori's household. The family head and his two children apart, three non-familial groupings attached to the list at different times are enumerated, who are designated by the tenn dt.
