X Kisalföld - X-8 House from Süttör
X-8 House from Süttör The farmstead of the prosperous Varga family stood in the "street of the farmers" in Süttör near Lake Fertő. The arched porch indicates the prosperity of the dwelling itself. The first section of the porch, built in the curve of the street, jutted out compared to the other houses according to the typical sawtoothed pattern of villages in this region. From the side window of the first room the whole street could be observed, which was vital in preventing the spread of fire. Instead of reed - so frequent by the lake - the roof of the brick house was covered with tiles: an indication of affluence and for fire prevention. • Saint Florianus The statuette of St. Florianus, the patron saint of fires, floods, fire-fighters and chimney-sweeps stands in a niche in the facade. He was a Roman legionary who saved the fortress and his soldiers from a conflagration with superhuman effort. He suffered martyrdom for his Christian faith in 304. As a rule, he is depicted in uniform pouring water from a pait on a burning house. He is particularly respected in Bavaria, Austria and Hungary. 164
