basis of ethnographical research. Within the units there will be traditional peasant households, supplemented by sacred, communal and outbuildings which are representative of traditional villages. The dwellings and outbuildings are typical of each region at various times in its history. By the time the 9 originally planned regional units are completed the museum will have preserved the vernacular architecture of the 18th and 19th century as historic heritage on a scale which is unique in Europe. The regional units are - Upland Market Town (opened in 2006), Upper-Tisza Region (1974). Southern Transdanubia (2005), Bakony-Balaton Uplands (2000), Western Transdanubia (1993), Kisalföld (1987) The Great Plains /Alföld/ unit is currently in the process of being built and the Northern Hungarian Village is scheduled to be opened in 2010 with the last unit the Middle-Tisza Region following after that. Our researchers are already working on the extension and further development of the original scientific concept, based on the latest developments in open air museology; social and visitors' demands. We are planning a regional unit to show the way of life of the Hungarian minorities beyond our borders; the planning of a Historical regional unit presenting the rural architecture of Hungary in the 11th15th centuries is complete; and there are outline plans for the unit illustrating the buildings and lifestyles of villages in the 20th century.
