basis of ethnographical research. Within the units there will be tra­ditional peasant households, sup­plemented by sacred, communal and outbuildings which are rep­resentative of traditional villages. The dwellings and outbuildings are typical of each region at vari­ous times in its history. By the time the 9 originally planned regional units are com­pleted the museum will have preserved the vernacular archi­tecture of the 18th and 19th cen­tury as historic heritage on a scale which is unique in Europe. The regional units are - Upland Market Town (opened in 2006), Upper-Tisza Region (1974). Southern Transdanubia (2005), Bakony-Balaton Uplands (2000), Western Transdanubia (1993), Kisalföld (1987) The Great Plains /Alföld/ unit is currently in the process of being built and the Northern Hungarian Village is scheduled to be opened in 2010 with the last unit the Middle-Tisza Region following after that. Our researchers are already working on the extension and further development of the origi­nal scientific concept, based on the latest developments in open air museology; social and visi­tors' demands. We are planning a regional unit to show the way of life of the Hungarian minori­ties beyond our borders; the planning of a Historical regional unit presenting the rural archi­tecture of Hungary in the 11th­15th centuries is complete; and there are outline plans for the unit illustrating the buildings and lifestyles of villages in the 20th century.
