X-3 Votive chapel from Jánossomorja I K The votive chapet of St. Anne was erected by the Catholic German inhabitants of Jánossomorja • in 1842 as a memorial to cholera v r • epidemic of 1831. It was built from public contributions on the site of a former chapel. The 2 votive The epidemic, of Indian origin broke out in the summer of 1831 in the counties of Northern Hungary and spread quickly throughout the country. Half a million people became infected, half of whom died. Lacking any effective protection people experimented with various cures such as wearing amulets of chloride and camphor (distributed for disinfection] around their neck. pictures on the triumphal arch were painted by Johann Ehrlinger Pink immediately after the epidemic. The figures were modelled on real people. The German caption on the pictures reads, "In memory of the raging cholera epidemic between August 6th and October 31st in 1831 claiming 186 victims; and out of gratitude for their familys survival this picture was donated by Georg and Anna Heischman innkeepers!' One of the pictures portrays a nursing home with the priest delivering the last rites, the other shows open graves in a cemetery. • Cholera • 156
