X X-1 Devotional statue from Csepreg placed on a ship lit with torches, while burning tar wreaths were put on the water The ship was escorted by water-borne procession of boats emblazoned with torches or floating candles. Near the entrance of the regional unit we come across the statue of St. John of Nepomuk carved from limestone. The statue is from Csepreg in GyőrMoson-Sopron County where it was erected by the community of the market town at the end of the 18th century for the protection of roads, waters and bridges. St. John of Nepomuk, who lived in the 14th century, is one of the best known saints of Central Europe. The martyr of the seal of confession was born in Pomuk, Bohemia. In spite of his humble peasant origins he progressed quickly in the ecclesiastical hierarchy. He was chosen as confessor by Joan, wife of Venceslav IV. According to the legend the king wanted to know what his wife had told the confessor but as he would not reveal it, he was tortured and thrown into the river Vltava. His death was accompanied by a miracle: his body became encircled by heavenly light and a multitude of blazing candles floated on the surface of the river On his day, May 16th, processions went to his statues.
