Not unlike in English, quite a number of idioms, proverbs and even swear-words in Hungarian evoke in an unbelievable ampleness man's best friend, the dog. To mention a few, having their counterpart in English: That's where the dog is buried" - Barking dogs do not "The tail wagging the dog" - "He leads a dog's Life ". Still, do we know enough about the process how the dog has become our companion, hunting companion, guard of our possessions and our faithful friend? We talk about ancient Hungarian dog breeds - but are they really ancient breeds: the kuvasz, the komondor, the puli, the pumi, the mudi, the kopó, the Nagykunság keeps a selection of several traditional Hungarian domestic animals, like the racka sheep, the grey cattle, the goat and the mangalica pig. in our series Skanzen Booklet this time we deal with our dogs selected from the dwellers of the farmstead. We focus on the two puli-pumi mongrels Mákos and Guba and with them we present the life of the dogs in villages and pastures as well as the special relationship between man, flock and dog. 7
