The railway and the station are more than a phenomenon of economy and transport: they have a strong social function and symbolic value. The station building itself - with all its decorative elements - represents the spirituality of the period, embodies the outspoken message of the builders and town developers to their contemporaries. The station became soon the place of honourable arrivals and departures, besides its function in daily travelling. Mostly a well-chosen choreography - and sometimes the good luck - lifted the station above its normal function, into a highly symbolic, representative place. It is a protected monument today. 37
