The railway companies made an effort to purchase for the standard gauge railroads cheaper types of engines with cheaper upkeep. The trains were pulled at the beginning by tenderengines and later by engines with smaller tenders. The running costs of these latter were less and it was not necessary to turn the engines at the railheads.
