FLOWERS OF THE RAILWAY The standard plans worked out by MÁV paid great attention to form and standardize the environment of railway stations. After opening the railways, tree planting was initiated on every station. Mainly lime and horse-chestnut trees were planted around the station buildings, because they were resistive against the smog of the locomotives. Next to the trees there were symmetric flowerbeds, which were separated by narrow roads strewed with small, white stones. With the help of railway brand new flower types spread in Hungary. The dahlia and different type of improved roses became well known during this period. MAV supported the standardization of flowering by creating central gardening facilities, so every station could be supplied with flowers and trees from there. Railway stations were adorned with Geranium in boxes and pots hanging from above. This easy-care flower shortly became very popular among peasant women, and soon it could be found in every home and with the help of railway it became a real Hungarian flower. Also a decision was made about the spread of the cold-bearing, but long blooming Geranium. According to this, on this side of the Laj- ta the erected type, and beyond the Lajta the bent down type had to be used. A VASÚT VIRAGAI A MÁV által elterjesztett típustervekben nagy figyelmet fordítottak a környezet kialakítására és egységesítésére. A vasutak megnyitása után minden állomáson fásítást kezdeményeztek. Elsősorban hársfát és vadgesztenyét ültettek, amelyek jól bírták a mozdonyok okozta szennyezéseket. A fák mellett szimmetrikus virágágyások voltak. Ezekben teljesen új virágfajtákat honosítottak meg. A dália, a muskátli és a különböző nemesített rózsák ekkor váltak mindenki számára ismertté. A virágosítás egységesítését a MÁV azzal segítette, hogy központi kertészetet hozott létre, s onnan látták el az állomásokat virágokkal, fákkal. A vasútállomásokat ládákban, fentről lógatott cserepekben muskátlival díszítették. Szinte mindenhol megjelenő igénytelen virágot gyorsan megkedvelték a falusi parasztasszonyok is, és hamarosan szinte minden portán ott találjuk, és ezáltal válik igazi magyar virággá. A hideget is tűrő, de hoszszasan és pompásan virágzó muskátli elterjesztésére külön egyeztetés után hoztak utasítást, miszerint a Lajtán túl a lefelé konyuló futós, a Lajtán innen a felfelé álló típus kerüljön az ablakokba. 47
