RAISING FUNDS: SUBSCRIBING SHARES Firstly, to convince the local people about the importance of railway the constructor company convened meetings. In the next step the costs were determined, and the executive committee was elected. This corporation consisted 10-15 people and its main role was subscribing shares. Those farming along the secondary railway lines responded differently to the share subscribing calls. At this time it turned out, that the squatters and the counties did not have enough fund. To lighten this situation Gábor Baross minister regulated the credits given by the government. The constructors received tax exemption for thirty years, and they did not have to pay transport tax for ten years. The government obliged the interested state and treasury foundations to take up funds, borrowing was made possible and the people of nearby towns could participate in the construction of railways via communal work. Ordinary shareholders of local railways were recruited mainly from the nearby regions. Besides the farmers, tradesmen, lawyers, merchants, small businessmen who could invest only a few coronas, shown up the burghers who could invest thousands of coronas. Of course factory and estate owners also became shareholders, just like the local governments of villages and towns. gfj»»Mm* - -5 - «jp^ MCf f v-i . '• --•<•-I««-' »-. >«7». £1 - 4PK >.
