PRESS-HOUSE AND MAN The building group planned for the Bakony, Balaton- Uplands will present three press-houses. The press- house from Balatoncsicsó to be built as a replica is a two storied building the facade of which is decorated with plaster ornaments characteristic of the early classicism. The press-house originating from the 19th century together with a vineyard belonged to the Sárffy family from Kisdörgicse. Using archive sources, the paper presents the story of the well-to-do gentry family: their lands spreading over four villages and their material provisions. The vineyard, quite far from their dwelling place, was cultivated by day-labourers and the wine was also sold in Austria. The last owner, a widow with her 170 iuger land, was considered to be a big landowner and all her land and her village house was confiscated after 1949. The elderly woman moved out to the press-house and used it as a dwelling house. She had the remaining vineyard cultivated by day labourers. After her death the heirs sold the decaying building together with the neglected vineyard. The present owners use the renovated press-house as a holiday home, some vines and fruit trees have also been planted. For them the press-house is the venue of family events, where friendly relations are maintained. The story of the building characterises the transformation of the nearby vineyards: as a result of the large- scale production methods introduced by the cooperatives, viniculture spread down over the foot of the hills. The abandoned cellars on steeper hillsides are mainly used as holiday homes these days or the once was vineyards are taken back by the wild. Therefore, vineyards reflect a mixed picture: since the change of regime in Hungary beside the flourishing family vineyards there have been holiday houses and small vineyard parcels, too together with derelict cellars and lands. 239
