peasant architecture were amazing. It was the com­plexity and wealth of his teaching arising from this knowledge that made his lectures so colourful and enjoyable. László Vargha's knowledge was based not only on complete familiarity with the literature on the subject, but also on his rich personal experiences and research work. In the course of his life he journeyed widely in Hungary and abroad, made a great number of study trips, visits to the field and measurements of buildings, made and classified thousands of photographs, took part in archaeological excavations and attempted reconstructions, did research in archives, practical museological work, conducted extensive correspon­dence with Hungarian and foreign specialists and published many writings. His knowledge was exceeded only by his modesty. He always spoke of his own research findings as an outsider, never mentioning himself. At the same time, he always drew attention to the successful work of his highly respected colleagues or, in many cases, of his students. He frequently invited his past students to give lectures in the specialized training for engineers. It can be said that he effectively applied a more infor­mal, open and effective form of teaching than that generally used.
