V - „'Tis enough if it shines for me” - A Barren Hour (Thomas Cooper)

"My love was true, this he did know, No barrier between us did spread; Still he insisted that I tell him so Or else, told me I would see him dead; In jest, I gave him this dagger: 'go ahead'!" Wildly, she draws the long dagger out, A new, fierce light in her eyes does flash. Weeping, laughing, waving it about, Out the manor door she then does dash - To stand in her way, no one so brash. Down the road she goes, chanting villanies: Singing, dancing past each village house: "This girl had a lover once to tease, His passions she did rouse and then douse, Playing him the way a cat does with a mouse!" A Barren Hour I gaze on the tremendous night, The world in darkness sleeps below, And flaring stars shoot left and right, Much as thoughts restless come and go. The bubbles of my thoughts, like stars, First light the firmament, then fade, And never finishing their path, They burst before they’ve gone halfway.
