Adrovitz Anna: ARC poetica. Petőfi Sándor életében készült képmásai (Budapest, 2012)

Függelék - Sándor Petőfi's Art/s Poetica | Summary

There are three main types of portrait painting. The first category comprises depictions that record the lineaments of the poet in the form of bust-length, half-length and three-quarter-length portraits. Graphics representing various contemporary events of the time constitute another group, and the third category is the full-length paintings by Sándor Petőfi's cousin and close friend, Soma Orlai Petries. What makes these intimate portraits particularly memorable is that they depict the poet primarily in his private setting, since they were intended not for the general public but rather for the close family. Thus, these paintings show features of Petőfi's personality and particulars of his surroundings that offer the viewer a more complex visual portrait of the poet and a more nuanced understanding of the man himself. The book shows that in Petőfi's case there exists a direct relationship between his self-definition as a poet, his ars poetica and his visual representations, since those artists who produced the portraits had a thorough and vivid knowledge of his poetic and literary oeuvre. Consequently, as the title of the volume suggests, Sándor Petőfi's portraits and literary oeuvreare organically interwoven and form an indissoluble unity.
