then Sándor Fekete, as president and Pál Oláh as co-president, it is a national organisation which co-ordinates more than twenty memorial sites, publishes books and organises the annual Meeting of Petőfi Memorial Sites. It also organises academic conferences where local historians, teachers, priests and amateur researchers can contribute to the discussions. Beyond the borders of Hungary, a traditional Petőfi cult place is the Romanian town of Segesvár, where every year celebrations are held on 31st July. The cult is also alive in Koltó, where its presence is all the more remarkable as it was formed without the usual official support. The summer commemorations in Koltó are followed by an all-night ball to which everyone is invited, and in the castle gardens stands an ancient dogwood tree from which, in the 1920s, forty young shoots were taken and planted in the garden of the house in Bajza utca. This tradition is still alive today; the people of Koltó regularly send new cuttings to the house in Kiskőrös and the Petőfi Literary Museum. People in towns and villages in Slovakia also hold commemorations at Petőfi memorial sites, and inaugurate new memorial plaques and statues. In Ungvár and Beregszász in the Sub-Carpathian region, a new Petőfi statue was unveiled and a memorial room was opened. The most recent proof of the vitality of the Petőfi cult is the Pest-Buda Petőfi Association, which was founded on 15th March 1990. It seeks to follow in the footsteps of the Petőfi Society and aims to preserve Budapest’s Petőfi memorials. Its first president, Antal Wéber, was succeeded by Béla Harmati, and the managing secretary is Károly Varjas. Members — grammar school teachers and pupils, and fans of Petőfi - meet regularly on 2nd January in the Pilvax Coffee House for their annual dinner, and organise recitals, competitions and educational lectures. The long-term plan of the Association is to create a National Memorial Site, a Pest-Buda Sándor Petőfi Memorial House, and a study of this nascent social movement may prove an interesting sociological task for the future.
