He was one of the leaders of the cult. Correspondence with his parents informs us of his role in organising such happenings: “I will direct an evening devoted to Ady on the fifth anniversary of his death at the end of January. The participation of 1000 Hungarians can be expected and if the calculations are right, the performers could have a decent sum in addition to the marble plaque.”23 Erecting a marble plaque to the poet who had died five years previously is suggested by the 25-year-old artist who settled in Paris with great hope yet found it difficult to make both ends meet. However, balancing the advantages and drawbacks, he later decided not to perform at the event. Perhaps unwillingly the printed programme on the invitation included his name. He would have recited the poem Walking along New Waters. We can regard it as symbolic that the future photographer Gyula Halász (Brassáf) could be one of the first promoters of Ady’s cult among 39
