he took photographs of the artist and his works from the beginning of their friendship and thus contributed to the deaf-and-numb Lajos Tihanyi’s better communication and networking. We can see Tihanyi in the studio, in the street, on outings in the circle of friends, artists and pretty women, on portraits considered private, or those that can be sent to a wider circle. Kertész was there when Tihanyi, accompanied by BrassaT, met his gallerist Jan Slivinsky, and also when the painter was saying farewell before moving to the USA. Kertész had already collected picture postcards of artworks in Hungary and perhaps that gave him the idea of using cheap photographic paper of postcard size, which met his aesthetic expectations with its intimacy and fine hues in tone.13 Recent research emphasises the signifi­cant inf uence that Tihanyi’s painting had on Kertész's photography in the early years he was in Paris.14 Thanks to Kertész’s easily adapting personality, his Hungarian friends’ help and the curious, until then missing men­tality of his images, his photographs were already published in German papers in 1926. Then he was able to have a joint exhibition with the painter Ida Thai, a Kandinsky pupil, in the Galerie Au Sacre du Printemps on Montparnasse, on 12 March 1927. Not long before, in 1925, the gallery situated in the music shop of Jan Slivinsky, who was of Polish descent, organised an exhibition of Lajos Tihanyi’s paintings. Thus, either he or painter and art critic Michel Seuphor of Belgian roots, whom Kertész had earlier met through Gyula Zilzer, could have initiated his joint exhibition. On the occasion of the exhibition opening, the editor-in-chief of the avant-garde journal L’Esprit Nouveau, Belgian poet Paul Der- mée, organised an evening where poems by Lajos Kassák, Attila József, Hans Arp, Goethe, Villon and Tristan Tzara were recited in the original language.
