ESSAYS-LECTURES - Gy. Regöly-Mérei: Paleopathological Examination of Skeletal Finds in the Roman Period and Description of Diseases in Greek and Roman Medical Texts (in English)

g) Narrowing of the foramen jugulare : While for instance the foramen jugulare can widen in consequence of meningioma (Lindgren) its narrowing comes under the heading of congenital malformations. In my experimental material of the Roman period this happened in one case. On the left side foramen jugulare of a female juvenile skull II. degree narrowing with spina. If the narrowing of the formen jugulare is in existance for a longer time this can cause to the decreased circulation of the vena jugularis which can cause sudden death from brainpressure. This possibility is not contradicted by the fact that in our case there are no paleopathological signs of increased intracranial pressure. My experience is, that the narrowing of the foramen jugulare appears more frequently on the left side than on the right from my previously published 22 cases [19] the narrowing occured on the left side in 13 cases, in 8 cases on the left and in one case in both sides. A striking circumstance is the fact that there are populations where the narrowing of the foramen jugulare accumulate. So, for instance examining ancient Egyptian mummies [19] (II—IV. century a.Ch. .. delta of the Nile) I found one case from among 25 which because of the very small number could be a mathematical chance, but examining the Keszthely-Keszthelyfenék Avar population from 103 skulls I found narrowing in 15 cases, this amount can be significant. At other times however in examination of many hundred finds not one case occured. WORKS CONSULTED 1.
