MEDICAL HISTORY IN HUNGARY - E. Schultheisz L. Tardy: Summing-up of the Past and Present of Hungary's Medicohistorical Research Work (in English)

(1892—1944) excellent book "Hungarian Stomatologic History" (Budapest, 1942), dealing, however, with the subject only from the specialized point of view, the former presents the history of stomatology in Hungary as an integral part of the medical history of Hungary. The general history of paediatrics had been written by János Bókaÿ in German (Geschichte der Kinderheilkunde, Berlin, 1922) (History of Paediatrics). Studies referring to the history of Hungarian ophthalmology have been published also by Imre Bíró. Géza Hahn has written the history of Hygiene in Hungary. The monography "Chapters of the history of Russian-Hungarian medical relations" (Budapest, I960), discloses a rich archival material [13]. Lajos Varga's work "Regulation and situation of public health in Hungary in the last quarter of the 19th century", published as a supplement of the Communicationes ex Bibl. Hist. Med. Hung. (Budapest, 1962), too, contains a considerable archival material as also another of his works, published in the same periodical in 1964, "Outstanding medical members of the State Public Health Council" (1868— 1893). As a third supplement of the above publication, an extremely important reference work is that by Béla Iványi: "Details of the history of infectious diseases in Hungary. Data derived of the archive of Körmend concerning the history of plague in the 16th and 17th centuries (1520—1692)". The basis of the work was the hitherto unknown material of the Batthyány archives. An up to now hardly known epoch of medical history is discussed in the work published in 1968 by Sándor Székely , entitled "Ideological trends in Hungarian hygienic politics" (1920-1945). From among biographic works of recent years, the followings are of interest: Zoltán Alföldÿ—József Sós: "Life and work od Endre Högÿes" (Budapest, 1962); Géza Hahn— József Mellÿ: Life and work of József Fodor" (Budapest, 1965); György Gortvay— Imre Zoltán: "Life and work of Semmelweis" (Budapest, 1966); István Benedek: "Semmelweis and his times" (Budapest, 1967); Béla Issekutz, Sen .; "Miklós Jancsó, Sen. and Miklós Jancsó, Jun., two medical scientists" (Budapest, 1968); László Harañgĥÿ s book about Viktor Babes; Endre Réti: "Great Hungarian physicians" (Budapest, 1959), and by the same author: "Masters of the Hungarian medical school" (Budapest, 1969), published as a collection of biographies on the occasion of the 200 years' memorial of the foundation of the medical faculty. The literature of the history of pharmacology is inseparable from Hungarian medical historiography. The first summarizing work of Hungarian pharmacology is that by Sándor Scheđeÿ : "The concised history of Hungary's pharmacology" (Budapest, 1897). Gyula Orient's "The history of pharmacology in Transylvania and the Bánát" (Kolozsvár-Cluj, 1926) is based on independent research work. The book by János Studény and Antal Vondra "Famous pharmacists" (Budapest, 1929) contains the biography of Hungarian and foreign pharmacologic scientists. Beside of his studies of great importance on synthesis, József Ernyey has enriched pharmacohistorical literature with a great deal of new data. 20
