HUNGARY SUMMARY The Honvédség (or Hungarian Royal Defence Force) - formed in 1868 - gradually built up its own medical staff of officers, consisting of professional (active) and reserve doctors, respectively. The number of medical officers till the beginning of the World War I. grew ca. to its quadruple. The main task of this medical staff was to cure the wounded and the protection against epidemics. The number of wounded soldiers in the Great War reached the million, much more than planned before - the wounded were, however, treated on a sufficient level. The applied prophylaxis proved to be successful as well, for until the very end of the war there was no serious epidemic in the country. The medical staff faced three important questions: 1. How long should the wounded soldiers lie at the place of their wounding? 2. Who should give them the first bandage? 3. Within how much time should they receive their first bandage? Author analyses the activity of the medical staff based mainly on archival sources. He concludes, that this activity proved to be successful, even in comparison with medical services of other more developed armies. Kemény Gy.: Az orvos szerepe a lövészárok csapatainál.
