KÖZLEMÉNYEK - COMMUNICATIONS - NAMAL, Arin - HONTI József: Efforts in 1947 to make Prof. Dr. Ernestus de Balogh (1890-1964) work for the University of Istanbul. (Erőfeszítések annak érdekében, hogy Balogh Ernő professzor (1890-1964) az Isztambuli Egyetemen dolgozhassék.)

nonchalantly all by myself, without my diapositives, photographs, préparais, education materials and my study documents. My good faith has saved me from these worries. Thanks to your letter my feeling of trust is now much stronger. I immediately went to the cruise travel office and was met by their smiling faces. A few rainy days should be sufficient for our biggest cruise ship "DEBRECZEN" to berth at Budapest. They hope the ship will arrive in about one week. The regulations prevent the ships from departing before the end of February or the beginning of March, due to the risk of freezing. However, as soon as the motor vessel arrives at Budapest, they will allow all my scientific materials to be shipped under my personal control, and to store them in a safe place. Only then, I can begin my trip in peace... According to the information I received, the only possibility for me to make this trip is to go by couchette train until Constanta, and to travel by ship from Constanta to Istanbul. However, this vessel comes only once a month. The next ship is now on 16 January 1948. As I'm financially broke, I would like you to send 1600 Hungarian Forint (approximately USD 133), being the cost of this trip, to the name of Mr. Zeki Karabuda in Budapest, so that he can buy the necessary travel tickets for me. If you could send the subject amount until 8 January 1948, the travel agency here will be able to make the reservation for the ship and for the couchette train. Otherwise I will have to wait for the next ship until mid-February. This is also an appropriate and economical way, which would save you from bearing unnecessary charges." Later in the same letter Balogh writes that he already completed the plans of the Cancer Institute scheduled to be built in Istanbul. He has gathered the results of his latest studies in 4 articles and would like to present them to the members of Turkish Medical Academy when he arrives in Turkey. He continues to monitor the world literature very carefully and has taken notes of about 170 pages within the scope of post-graduate education. He couldn't come to Istanbul Although the Dean has immediately contacted Balogh when he succeeded to find a way to transfer foreign currency, Balogh's letter shows that the couldn't receive the amount in a short time. Later correspondence between the Dean, Turkish Embassy and the Dean of Faculty of Medicine in Budapest show the vigorous efforts for making Balogh come to Turkey. In his letter dated 17 June 1948 to Karabuda, the Dean expresses his sorrow both for the delay in answering letters due to his illness for the last two months and for the delay in arrival of Balogh to Turkey: "We were much happy to see a scientist at such quality. Furthermore, he could be very helpful during the set-up and evolution of the Cancer Institute in our Faculty. I sincerely do not know whether our unwanted delay in sending his travel costs due to some financial bureaucracy had any impact on the conclusion of this matter. I request you to try once more to secure Professor Balogh's travel to Istanbul, and in case no result to be obtained, to return us back the advanced amount of USD 934,45 that we had sent you. Thank you once again for your kind efforts on making us earn a valued scientist." The Undersecretary of Embassy, Karabuda declares on 7 August 1948 that the attempts of Professor Balogh to obtain his passport is upto conclude, and that he even wants to bring
