KÖZLEMÉNYEK - COMMUNICATIONS - NAMAL, Arin - HONTI József: Efforts in 1947 to make Prof. Dr. Ernestus de Balogh (1890-1964) work for the University of Istanbul. (Erőfeszítések annak érdekében, hogy Balogh Ernő professzor (1890-1964) az Isztambuli Egyetemen dolgozhassék.)

"hepatorenal syndrom" occuring at the most hyperacute form of cholera attracts me very much in respect of my studies related to cancer cachexia. Therefore I would like to make a comparative study by dissecting fresh cadavres of cholera. Therefore, please don't be surprised if you learn from your local consulate that I applied to travel to Egypt as a physician on cholera." Balogh tells in his letter that he is sincerely sorry for the delay of his trip to Istanbul. He adds that he has no request for cash payment for his trip at that stage. Trying to complete the procedures Meanwhile the Dean tries to send money to Balogh for his trip. As no contract is signed with Balogh yet, it is not possible to transfer foreign currency in his favour. As an appropriate method, it has been decided to transfer the required amount to the Undersecretary of the Embassy Mr. Zeki Karabuda so that he can relay the amount to Professor Balogh. The Dean of the Faculty of Medicine informs the Undersecretary of Turkish Embassy in Budapest, Mr. Karabuda on 12 December 1947, that he has sent USD 934,- for being handed over to Prof. Balogh. Meanwhile Hamit Kosay, who worries that the arrival of Balogh to Turkey is getting more and more difficult, to almost impossible, applies to the general manager of Higher Education Mr. Faik Resit Unat on 25 November 1947 and repeats his request about this appointment: "I think that it would be much rewarding for our Cancer Institute if Prof. Balogh, who is well recognized in international scientific circles and who received several prizes could work here. The professor told me in his letter dated 1 November 1947 that he sent some of his publications to Dr. Üveis Maskar in Budapest through our Embassy there. As he told me, Prof. Balogh is also in touch with the Rockefeller Foundation in USA and also received an invitation from Professor von Muralt in Bern, Switzerland. But he says that he prefers Turkey. I kindly submit the subject to your approval. " Balogh writes another letter to the Dean on December 17, 1947. He tells that the letter he received from the Dean two days ago is the only one he received from him since 17 July 1947, though he has sent many letters to the Dean and to Professor Maskar, who is the director of the Cancer Institute. He is happy with the pre-contract delivered him by the Undersecretary of the Embassy Mr. Karabuda. Thanks to this contract, he will be able to prove to the local authorities that he is accepted to work for the Istanbul University. He agrees with the contract, but he just wishes the tax deductions to be made from the date he starts working. His next words show the great difficulties he had to face during transportation of his much cherished scientific materials: "/ couldn't leave my scientific collections even during the horrible war aiming to invade our capital and I waited by their side for 4 months in the cellars of my Institute. We would either be saved together or lost together. Thanks to the sacred tolerance of our University Senate, the first one has happened. Related authorities try to comfort me by saving that a couple of rainy days would be sufficient for the ships to start their sailing on the river Danube. But unfortunately, we currently live the worst drought for the last 80 years here. I am worried that this condition would exceed your understanding and tolerance. I just can't imagine to set forth
