Since the publication of the first Hungarian treaty on geriatrics in 1692 several works have been published by Hungarian scientists. Organised research in the field of gerontology started in 1954 by the foundation of the Gerontological Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. The author summarizes the following landmarks in gerontology: - The set up of organizations in the field of gerontology. - The foundation of research institutions and their scientific and educational work. - International relationships by organizing international congresses in Hungary, offices and honours of Hungarian scientists in international organizations. - And finally proposals for future development.
