TANULMÁNYOK — ARTICLES - Ishida, Sumio: Reception of a Viennese physician in Japan. A bibliographic study on the works of Joseph Jacob Edler von Plenck (1730—1807) — Egy bécsi orvos hatása Japánban. Bibliográfiai tanulmány Joseph Jacob Edler von Plenck (1730—1807) munkásságáról

Plenck wrote many books. There are 29 items (68 editions) of Latin books, 31 items (81) editions of German books, 15 items (29 editions) of Dutch books and 38 items of Japanese (out of which 12 items are printed and 26 items are manuscripts). Furthermore I have found many other translations. The title page of Dutch or Japanese translation usually explains its original version and edition. So it is easy to suppose the relation among the Latin, the German, the Dutch and ultimately the Japanese version. Table 4 and Table 5 show these relations to one another. Although Plenck was neither Dutch nor German, he was the top author of Rangaku medical books which Japanese doctors accepted during the 19 th century. Because he is an unknown scientist for the Japanese today it makes studying him rather odd and difficult. Table 1.
