SUMMARY The construction of the Szent János Hospital at Budapest began in 1895 and for the centenary of this event are this curious selection of documents published. According to their dates the documents are divided into two main groups: (a) those from the first half of the century and (b) the contemporary regulations from the Hospital. Within the periodical distinction the regulations are arranged due to their subjects as well. The first subject group deals with organisational matters, including report regulations, the setting up of a temporary influenza ward, and outpatient services. The second group concentrates on economical measurements, including the restriction of using hospital telephones for private talks, the rationalisation of drugs and food supply. The third group is about the organisation of labour, including schedules of duty, public relation contacts, hospital working dresses and uniforms and the last one about the required behaviour of leaders and staff members. Though it is interesting that how higly organised the Szt. János Hospital was in the first half of the century, it is probably even more curious that how similar problems were to be overcome in the 1920s and in the 1970s.
