the final approval was denied by the Party. For the same reason Balogh was not given the prestigious National Kossuth Prize. It was written in a biography of the great ophthalmologist Emil Grósz (25) ' 'on retirement the majority of prominent physicians turn their back on the work in which they have been engaged and begin to occupy themselves with archeology, music, historic studies, botany, etc. Interestingly, only a minority of emeritus professors remains faithful to medicine". Balogh belonged to this minority. He led the clinic for 22 years and retired in 1966 at the end of summer. Afterwards, as a consultant he walked daily to the clinic in the Maria Street, because his interest in science and his joy of working remained unchanged. Evidence of this are nine substantial articles which were published between 1967 and 1972 in the Fogorvosi Szemle. In 1972 he saluted István Varga on the 40th anniversary of his editorship of Fogorvosi Szemle. (17) Balogh died after a short illness on May 4, 1973 and was buried in the Farkasrét cemetery. It is not difficult to see today the results that have grown out of Balogh's work. The School of Dental Sciences, which he established 40 years ago, is prospering. The dental education started by him has been vindicated. Most institutes and departments of the School of Dental Sciences are directed by his former students or their students. Outstanding among them is Professor Jolán Bánóczy; her caries research is in the tradition of the Balogh school. Balogh's books are still used by dental students and by practicing dentists. His name has become a hallmark, and after the downfall of the Communist system his reputation emerged in exemplary purity. Károly Balogh's life, his work, his founding of the School of Dental Sciences, and the emergence of a school are all significant elements in the history of medicine and, within this, of dental medicine in Hungary. It is the duty of the Hungarian dentists to maintain the memory of the school's founding master, to which this essay is offered. GYÖRGY HUSZÁR, Prof. M.
