SUMMARY The author by analyzing antique, medieval and later sources attempts to identify the often used Latin botanical term, 'saliunca'. Based mainly on philological data he concludes, that this popular and widely spread herb is identical with the Valeriana celtica L., the close relative of the well known tranquillant Valeriana officinalis L.
